Field Care Tips
Please take a little time and read through this section. Remember that how your trophy is handled from the time it is harvested until it is brought in to be mounted plays a major part in how the finished mount looks. One of the most important things is to get your trophy cooled if not frozen ASAP, heat promotes bacteria growth which causes hair , feathers and scales to become loose and fall out.
Big Game Shoulder Mounts= NEVER CUT the throat of an animal that you want mounted. Never hang or drag an animal by putting a rope around the neck, this burns and breaks hair and will likely be visible on the finished mount. When field dressing stop your cut at the sternum. Skinning- cut skin around animal behind front legs, skin out to base of head. Remove by cutting through spine. Take your time being careful to not cut into the skin. Wipe off blood with paper towels, put it in a garbage bag or wrap in plastic and place in freezer.
Big Game Life Size or Rug= Make sure all cuts are straight not jagged a sharp knife is very helpful here. Depending on what pose you want depends on which way the animal is skinned dorsal or ventral so please call prior to skinning so we can discuss which one suits the animal and pose.
Small Game= Wipe off blood with paper towels and place in plastic bag and freeze.
Birds= Never wring a birds neck that you want mounted, a steady squeezing of the chest will render the same results. Wipe off blood, place cotton in bill or beak. Make sure all feathers are groomed down against the body, place in plastic bag and freeze. Game vests wreak havoc on the feathers of a bird that you might want mounted, so please don't carry it around all day in there.
Fish= Make sure all fins are slicked down against the body, plastic cling wrap works good for this. Wrap in a wet towel or other kind of fabric, preferably not newspaper. Place in plastic bag and freeze.
